Q: Why is it important to have a properly-fitted breast prosthesis?
Breast prostheses are designed to replace missing breast tissue following a mastectomy, partial mastectomy, or lumpectomy. Today's state-of-the-art breast prostheses recreate the natural appearance, feel and weight of the female breast. It is very important to be fitted with the correct size, shape and weight breast form and the right size bra to restore your body's natural balance, alignment, and symmetry, thus preventing the development of spinal curvature, neck pain, back pain and shoulder drop. Be sure that you are fitted by a board-certified mastectomy fitter in an accredited facility to ensure that you are receiving the highest quality products and care.
To locate a Certified Mastectomy Fitter (CMF) in your area, call the manufacturer at 1-800-887-3370.
Q: What is a Certified Mastectomy Fitter (CMF)?
A Certified Mastectomy Fitter (CMF) is a licensed professional who is trained to fit women with the right breast prosthesis and bra after breast surgery. Your CMF can also help with your Medicare and private health insurance options as well as billing options.
Q: Do I need a mastectomy bra? How do I figure out what size to buy?
While fuller cut fashion bras are acceptable, a mastectomy bra is your best choice for a breast form because they have pockets in the cups to securely hold the breast form in place. Also, they are cut wider across the chest and under the arm for fuller coverage.
To help you figure out what size to buy, visit our Fitting & Care page. If you find you still need help, send us an email. To help us serve you more efficiently, please use "Fitting Question" for the subject line.
Q: What kinds of breast forms are available?
There are several types of breast forms on the market today:
The most popular type is the silicone breast prosthesis, because silicone most accurately replicates the natural texture and movement of the breast.
Silicone prostheses are available in
full weight
lightweight
extra lightweight . . .
as well as in a variety of shapes and sizes.
Other options are also available, including swim forms, and custom breast forms.
Extremely lightweight foam forms are also available for sleeping and relaxing.
Certified Mastectomy Fitters help women determine the best prosthesis and bra for their individual needs.
Q: I'm having breast surgery. When should I be fitted?
Consult your doctor about finding a Certified Mastectomy Fitter(CMF) in your area. Your doctor and CMF will help you answer these questions. It is usually important to wait until you are fully healed before you are fitted for a weighted prosthesis. Before surgery, ask your CMF about our After-Surgery Camisole and other items you might need.
Q: How do I clean and care for my breast forms?
Hand wash your breast forms with a soap that is safe for the skin. Towel dry and store in the cradle that came with the form. Please visit the Fitting & Care Page for more information.
Q: How do I choose the breast form that fits my bra size?
There are so many sizes and shapes in the NEARLY ME® brand that it is very important to visit a Certified Mastectomy Fitter (CMF) for post-surgery fitting. For non-medical use, please visit the Fitting & Care page.
Q: I've lost/gained weight and feel my breast form is no longer the right size - what should I do?
Consult your doctor and your Certified Mastectomy Fitter (CMF). Your CMF can best answer your Medicare and health insurance questions regarding mastectomy products.
Q: What do some of the terms mean?
For a glossary of terms, please visit the Glossary page.
Q: Are breast forms only for cancer patients?
No. On BreastForms.com you will find not only breast forms but also lingerie for the post-mastectomy patient. We also have a fashion line and several other health care products like RETOUCH® Silicone Scar Reduction Sheets. Anyone interested in wearing breast forms for size or unevenness should be able to find what they need.
Q: Can you swim in a breast form?
You can wear a silicone breast prosthesis in the water. Specially-designed swim forms are available to hold up to chlorine or salt water and preserve your everyday prosthesis. For additional information, check out the Athletic forms.
Q: What can be done for natural breast unevenness or breast imbalance after a lumpectomy?
Partial forms such as Equalizers, Enhancers, and Modified forms can be worn to restore an even silhouette.
Q: After surgery, my breasts are uneven, is there a breast form for me?
We have several partial prostheses that can restore evenness. Shallower, partial forms include Equalizers, Enhancers, and Modified forms. Talk to your doctor, health insurance carrier, and Certified Mastectomy Fitter about partial forms following lumpectomy or reconstruction surgery.
Q: Will my insurance pay for my breast forms and mastectomy bras?
If you have Medicare, Medicade or health insurance, you are probably eligible for breast forms and mastectomy bras. Medicare, Medicade and health insurance will NOT cover any purchases made through BreastForms.com.
Before making a purchase you should check with your health insurance carrier, and bring your insurance information with you when you visit a Certified Mastectomy Fitter(CMF).
Q: Do you manufacture breast implants?
No. Our manufacturer does not make internal silicone breast implants. We only sell prostheses/breast forms that are worn externally.
Q: Is the silicone in a breast form dangerous?
No. The silicone is cured and inert. And since breast forms are not inserted into the body but rather placed inside a mastectomy bra, if a breast form should tear or become punctured, the silicone cannot be absorbed through the skin.
When using RETOUCH® Silicone Scar Reduction Sheets and NEARLY ME® Silicone Security Strips, you will find silicone is in contact with the skin. Therefore, should you experience any discomfort, redness, or itching, discontinue use of that product and contact your doctor.
Q: How long do NEARLY ME® breast forms last?
With proper care, your breast forms should last several years . They should remain soft and life-like and maintain their shape. Silicone breast forms are very durable, but can be punctured or torn. For more information about cleaning and storing your breast forms, please visit our Fitting & Care Page.
Q: What is the difference between a fashion bra and a mastectomy bra? Can I wear a breast form in my regular bras?
It is recommended that you wear your breast form in a mastectomy pocket bra. Mastectomy pocket bras have been designed to fit with breast forms. They are typically different in three ways.
1.They have pockets inside the cups to keep the forms securely in place and comfortable against the skin.
2.Mastectomy bra side panels are wider under the arm to offer more support and coverage in an area where tissue is often removed during surgery.
3.The cup is designed to fully cover the entire breast form and more of the remaining natural breast. Some fashion bra cup styles may cut across the breast at too steep an angle and would not completely cover a typical breast form.
We also offer Nearly Me Technologies specialty bras like . . .
- The Leisure Bra for after surgery and sleeping
- The Lace Cami Bra for feminine coverage in the center of the chest
- The After-Surgery Camisole with pockets for featherweight breast forms and drainage devices.
